What does the Bible, Shakespeare, and Mark Twain have in common? All have been challenged or banned in one place or time. This class will take great pieces of literature that have been banned or challenged and examine them from a literary, historical, cultural/sociological, and psychological standpoint. (According to the ALA 48 of the 100 greatest works of literature have been banned or challenged.) Students will be required to read one book a month, critically analyze it from their own perspective and from those who challenged the book. (This is a great opportunity to beef up your reading list for college apps!) A partial list of the books to be covered include: Huckleberry Finn, The Jungle, The Grapes of Wrath, and All Quiet on the Western Front. This class will foster the ability to read all literature with greater understanding and appreciation.
